FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Helpful questions about burn surgery.

Published hospital information. Please contact the hospital for advice specific to your situation.

When does a burn injury require surgery?

Deep burns that damage significant layers of skin may require surgical treatment. A specialist assesses the burn's depth, size, location, and healing progress before recommending surgery.

What should I do immediately after a burn?

Cool the affected area under cool running water for 20 minutes. Remove nearby jewelry if possible, but do not pull off clothing stuck to the skin. Avoid applying ice, toothpaste, or oils.

What is skin grafting for burn injuries?

Skin grafting is a surgical procedure in which healthy skin is taken from another area of the body and placed over a damaged area to help cover the wound.

Do all burn injuries leave permanent scars?

No. Superficial burns may heal without significant scarring. Deep burns have a higher risk of permanent scars and may require additional treatment.

When should someone with a burn seek emergency care?

Large or deep burns, burns involving the face, hands, feet, or genitals, and electrical or chemical burns require urgent medical assessment. Breathing difficulties after smoke exposure are also an emergency.
