FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Helpful questions about hypospadias.

Published hospital information. Please contact the hospital for advice specific to your situation.

What is hypospadias in children?

Hypospadias is a birth condition in which the urinary opening is located on the underside of the penis instead of at its tip.

How is hypospadias diagnosed?

Hypospadias is usually identified during a physical examination after birth. A specialist assesses the location of the urinary opening and checks for penile curvature.

Does every child with hypospadias need surgery?

Not always. Some mild cases may not require correction. A pediatric surgical or urology specialist will recommend treatment based on the child's anatomy and urinary function.

At what age is hypospadias surgery usually performed?

When surgery is recommended, it is commonly performed during infancy, often between 6 and 18 months of age. The timing depends on the child's condition.

Should a baby with hypospadias be circumcised?

Circumcision should be postponed until a specialist evaluates the child. Foreskin tissue may be useful during surgical repair.
